Top 4 Ways To Be Active in New York City

Visiting New York City can often set your fitness routine back — especially if you’re there for work. But it’s not impossible. From biking to meetings to enjoying a morning sunrise jog through Central Park, here are the best ways to get some exercise in the city that never sleeps.

1. Bike to Meetings

New York is an ideal place to rent a bike. The four-year-old CitiBike program boasts 10,000 bikes, 600 stations and serves 55 neighborhoods sprawling Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and Jersey City, N.J. Renting couldn’t be easier: Simply find a kiosk on the system map and follow these instructions to purchase a pass. Then, unlock, pedal, and return to a kiosk near your end point. A single ride is just $4 and gets you 30 minutes, or if you’re committed to cycling, buy a three-day pass for $24.

2. Run Central Park

Whether you have only a half hour or all morning, Central Park is the best (and safest) place for runners in Gotham. For an easy run, hit the two-mile Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir Loop that runs counterclockwise around the small pond. Through breaks in the trees you’ll get beautiful city views from all vantage points. Or, opt for a 6.1-mile route around the park that runs along the East and West Park Drives, and cuts across at the north and south transverse. Click for a free running map.

3. Stretch Out and Stay Grounded with Yoga

Feeling stiff from the plane, or stressed out from work? New York is the perfect place to unwind with yoga — whether you like a slow stretch, or a sweaty flow, the city offers every style of class and type of teacher. For a classic approach to the Eastern tradition, try a class at the Iyengar Yoga Institute, and for a fun, outdoor summer experience to DJ beats, don’t miss Bryant Park’s free Yoga in the Park summer series. It runs Tuesday morning and Thursday evening each week, and features a variety of teachers from different backgrounds.

4. Hit the Gym in Your Own Wellness Hotel

Let’s face it, sometimes you just can’t fit in an outside exercise class or workout during an action-packed trip to NYC.
